Vero Beach just made history by dedicating a brand-new monument to the Submarine Veterans of the Treasure Coast a powerful tribute held at Veterans Memorial Island Sanctuary on Navy Day. The timing couldn’t be more symbolic: this year marks the Navy’s 250th anniversary and the 125th anniversary of the U.S. Submarine Service.
The dedication was led by retired USN Captain James Harvey, who presented a wreath in honor of all submariners’ past and present. Local leaders, including John Michael Matthews, spoke about the deep meaning behind the monument, while keynote speaker William C. Andrea delivered an emotional address.
This monument isn’t just a statue. It’s a reminder of the nearly 200 submariners who lost their lives in service, including heroes from right here on the Treasure Coast. Veterans Memorial Island, just south of the Merrill Barber Bridge, has long been known as one of the most beautiful sanctuaries in the nation a peaceful place to reflect, honor, and remember.
Moments like this are what make Vero Beach special. We show up, we remember, and we make sure the sacrifices of our heroes never fade from memory.
